I norally use the ordinary window glass for such a test. Works great!
Or I use two pieces of polarizing filter palte 10x10 cm,putting both
side of the blank one-one plate, and turn them 90 degrees.  And moving
around the disk.

Hi,

In discussing polarizing method of  glass checking for stress,
often is mentioned a  car windshield glass. Somebody like me can
get impression that windshield glass has some magic property
in polarizing  daylight.
Wouldn't any piece of glass do the same, like ordinary windows,  shop
windows even side windows of the car, if light is reflected at required 
angle?
