We would have to ask the filter manufacturer. I could guess it
would permit better light reduction with cheaper polarizers.
I do know that there is no shortage of circular polarizers as
camera accessories. I hoped to use camera polarizers for my
research and I never found one that was purely 2 linear polarizers.
Check Ebay, for instance, doing a search for "circular polarizer".
