In principle yes.
The idea is to have crossed polarizers to get dark field.
Than the stressed parts of the mirror glass put in between rotates slightly 
the
light polarization so that stressed parts are visible as brighter patches.

In this configuration test is most sensitive.

If you have pair of Polaroid sunglasses you can look through them
but have first to orient another polarizer so that it is crossed with
sunglasses. Than insert the blank.

If you are using LCD screen you have to either rotate the screen or
your head to have crossed condition (dark field), or keep the glasses in the 
hand
and rotate them until having dark field.
