I've channeled pitch laps using a U shaped thin piece of sheet metal
wrapped around a soldering Iron with wire. The tool is on edge with newspaper
under it to catch the pitch drippings. The legs of the 'U" are bent 
to fit around the tip of the
soldering iron. I also use and old Variac transformer to adjust the temp
of the iron.

Practice is recommended, after that the channeling is done fairly quickly.
Warm pressing afterwards will smooth the small raised edges on the
channels. YMMV...<g>
