Hi Alan,

I use the peanuts and tissue(Charmin) but I also use 2 inch thick Dow 
Styrofoam
insulation (pink stuff at Home Depot)and cut out a large round section
in which I cut a hole the size of the mirror.
Depending on mirror thickness I cut out two circular pieces from 1/2,
3/4 or1  inch thick sheets to fill in on both sides of the hole in which the
mirror is placed in the middle of the two inch section. On both sides I
cut out another1" thick section the same size of the 2" thick piece
and attach to both sides of the two inch piece with reinforced shipping
tape.. The whole thing is then four inches think with your precious cargo
snuggly fit in the middle.
All this I put in a box with peanuts all around and firmly packed in.
For a large heavy mirror the foam around the sides of the hole should
be substantial  to keep the mirrors weight, if dropped, from completely
crushing a side. Say from a loading dock to the asphalt lot. Especially if a
conventional thickness mirror.  Over kill! you bet but I rest easy at night
when my baby is out of my hands. The return trip home is another story!
This was how my 14 inch blank was shipped to me and I thought it was
really a great method.
