Roman,

All you need for all stages of rough and fine grinding is a feeler gauge or 
spherometer. One of the biggest mistakes a beginner can make is to try and 
over aniline a process that they have no experience with. Do that and I 
guarantee you'll end up chasing your tail for no reason at all. If you use 
the standard recommended strokes and techniques you won't need to and really 
shouldn't drag out the testing hardware until the mirror is fully polished 
out.
