Re: [ATM] solar telescope design with heliostat

Guy, once did up a spectroscope at RTMC which consisted of a
polished rod for the slit (sun's image becomes very small on the
about 3/8" rod) and a transmission grating mounted on the end of
a telescope that I made from a 50mm binoc objective and a 1.25"
eyepiece. The telescope was mounted on a tripod and placed about
10' away from the rod. The image you saw in the eyepiece was a
whole bumch of lines all in basically one color. It took several
degrees of rotating the telescope in the direction of the rod's
axis to go from deep red to violet and there were literally
thousands of lines. All of the major lines were easily seen as
they were very bright compared to the other lines.
The nice thing about the rod is that the sun doesn't move very
far across the surface from morning to evening so the image stays
pretty stable.
