Reducing vs oxidizing environment is in fact a major consideration in
the manufacture of specific types of glass. This affects parameters
such as transmission/absorbance characteristics (i.e., color) of the
glass, which does not seem to be important at this moment. I ran into
this issue when I was considering trying to make borosilicate with
properties similar to Corning Pyrex. Just something for future reference.
