Basiclly, you don't want to press the diamond disk against the
glass with a force that will allow it to rebound but rather like
a mill type force where the movement of the glass will cause so
much glass to be removed in a pass. Keep the speed of the glass
low and the grinding will happen nicely. If your machine is more
like a lever pressing down on the glass by gravity, you will end
up needing a fair bit of pressure (weights) to grind properly.
but you will then need to spin the glass rapidly, skimming the
diamond disk across the surface, to insure that the surface tends
to be even. With the immovable object type mounting of the disk,
you can use the face of the disk to take off the glass rather
than just using one side of the diamond disk.
I'll also note that when the diamond disk is new, there are some
diamonds that are higher than others and those few will want to
do most of the cutting as they are the only ones in contact with
the glass. The large pieces will cut great gobs of glass off but
very roughly. Eventually they break off and the rest of the grit
engages the surface and thus you get a finer cut but more glass
will be removed with a fiiner surface on the glass.
Keep the speed of the diamond disk as high as you can without
splashing (you can run higher if you make a catcher for the
splash) the water and dust about the shop as it will dry and
you'll have the silica dust floating about in short order,
working on your lungs.
What I mean by an elastic rate is that you feed the glass into
the disk as fast as it wants it to be at the maximum, by hand for
example rather than just at a set rate, although you can feed
slower and thus be able to feed at a fixed rate.
