Hello Doug,

I think you need more weight on the blade, probably lots more weight.  
I've used a 4 inch diamond blade in much the same way to do blanks up to 
14.5 inches and I use about 20 pounds on the blade.  I would have used 
more, but the blade flattened out and the center touched.  It doesn't 
make "scratching" noises at that weight but sounds more like the growl 
you hear when grinding with carbide. I always remember Dobson's (I 
think)  comment that hogging is "caveman" work.  It does cut rather fast 
with enough weight.  I suspect when you got to the 8 inch diameter there 
is just not enough pressure on the edge to do the cutting.
