Hey, I love refractors - they make great finder-scopes! And I've seen great pictures taken thru them (Hallas, etc).
But if you really want to SEE what you're looking at, you should use at least an 18" scope (sure, there's a FEW very-wide-field objects). Alas, that size refractor is not practicable for most people.
Also, I know a guy who spent $20,000+ for an 8" refractor which makes a WONDERFUL view. Just as good as the view thru my old $1,300, 8" Newtonian (side-by-side in easily subarcsecond seeing). Both scopes were purchased new, I'm sure the price of the refractor would come in closer if both were home-made. Still, the Newt is much easier to transport and deal with.
Kind've a saying: If you spend as much effort to build the Newtonian as you do building the refractor, it should provide just as good of an image, inch for inch.
