Hi Dave,

Things that you should consider is that the binoviewer you describe was
used on a microscope.  It ended up in the dumpster because it was
probably dropped.  The other thing is that the eyepieces are probably
Huygens type and are not suitable unless your scope is f10 or more.  I
don't know if this would have any affect on the problem you describe but
it might.
