So, in this regards, simpler I think might be better.  Several years ago 
when I purchased the board and motors for Mel's stepper drive system, I 
specifically got a "recycled" IBM P75 lap top, with no CD, noWindozs, 
just a clean DOS instal on a reformatted hard drive.  Everything seems 
to work fine. However I am definitely not up on more contemporary 
systems that people are using these days.
