[ATM] ATM from Paqkistan
Hello,
First of all I would like to thank all of you for such a quick response. It really moved me. You guys are the first ones who encouraged me to go on. Before I reply to your messages, I would like to know about following:
For all the messages that I received, in response to my “First mail to ATM list”, will I have to reply each of these separately or just keep on posting my reply on the ATM List?
I have the subscription of ATM mails in the form of digest. How can I access to the messages posted on daily basis.
For one thing I want to apologize in advance, I will not be able to reply as quickly as you people did. This is because I do not have a regular Internet/e-mail access. I use it from my Manager’s office in his absence (certainly with his permission).
In all the mails I received there are a lot of questions, which I will try to answer on by one.
I will appreciate your contributions for my project; give me some time to check about custom regulations and any import duties if valid for such shipment.
1. Project description: For my first scope I want to play safe therefore I decided to go for 6 inch f10 mirror without any parabolizing. I read it on many ATM-sites that such a mirror with spherical surface can produce acceptable views for a newcomer. After finishing the mirror it will be silvered, as I could not find any source for aluminizing.
2. I have following grits available
80 grit SiC
120 SiC
220 AlOx
320 AlOx
600 AlOx
1000 AlOx
3. I am also building focault/ronchi tester based on Stellafane design. I tried to print ronchi grating (80 LPI) on a 600dpi Laser jet printer but the result was not promising.
4. For pitch, as far as I can understand the nature of this material, I am going to use Coal-tar (a residue of petroleum fractionation commonly used for building roads) or some tree sap (as mentioned on some ATM site)
5. Is the material available on Internet is enough or a good book on ATM is really necessary?
6. I will try the method (suspending grit particles in water) to remove coarser grit from fines. How should I filter the grit out of water, when larger grit particles settle down?
7. Instead of ceramic tiles I used glass tiles, by taking glass strips and cutting them into tiles of about ¾`inch size for my 6`inch plaster tool. In my experience they are working well. I got this idea from some kit supplier who was offering glass tiles along with ceramic ones.
8. Sorry Ken I do not know the person you mentioned, infact I live in a very remote area (that’s where my Job is). It is an industrial Estate with abut 50 factories, away from any major city. The nearest (125 km) is Islambad the capital of Pakistan.
9. When I move to smaller grit size i.e. 600 the larger pits reduce in size but never seems to go away. The suggestion (by Bob May) to apply less pressure at start of wet to grind down any larger particles and then apply pressure will be put in to work and I will let you know the results.
10. As I mentioned in my first mail the only astronomy club I was able to find in Pakistan was in Lahore (Lahore astronomical society) which gave no response to my queries. As a matter of fact people around me (with whom I tried to share my ideas) think that I am going to become some kind of fortuneteller!
I thank all of you again for giving me a new spirit (The ATM spirit)
Good times to all,
Mahmood
