Not everybody has been online since ARPANET days. Here is an example of
how to set up a GUI email client to show threading.
1. If you are receiving the digest version of the list, go to
www.atmlist.net and change your options to get individual messages.
2. Make a folder in your email program just for atm list messages. It
should look something like
http://www.atmlist.net/contrib/mdholm-at-telerama-dot-com/folders.jpg
You probably make a new folder by clicking or right clicking on the root
folder. In my case, the root folder is mdholm@telerama.com
Then you need a message filter. In Thunderbird, you get them from the
Tools menu.
My atm list filter looks like
http://www.atmlist.net/contrib/mdholm-at-telerama-dot-com/atm_filter.jpg
This will cause list messages to go into the folder you specify rather
than just into the inbox.
Next, you need to set the folder view so that the messages appear
grouped by thread. In Thunderbird, this is on the View menu.
It looks like
http://www.atmlist.net/contrib/mdholm-at-telerama-dot-com/view-menu.jpg
This sorts threads by date, and groups subsequent messages under a
thread in a tree structure so you can see who replied to what. It looks
like

Now, when you want to reply to a message, either right click on it, or
open it and click the Reply or Reply to All buttons on your tool bar.
In Thunderbird, the Reply button sends a message just to the message
author. The Reply to All button sends to the author and the list. I
usually erase the author's address since he will get one courtesy of
being a list member. He doesn't need two copies.
Your email program will, or should, automatically send the correct
message id information for your message to be correctly threaded with
related messages. This only happens when you use the Reply or Reply to
All feature. If you Use the Write or Compose buttons to begin a new
message, it won't get the id of the previous message added as a
reference, so threading won't work properly.
If you receive the digest version, message id's are listed with each
message, but many email programs do not give a good way to get that
information into the correct place in the reply message's headers. It
isn't sufficient for it to appear in the message body. That is why you
need to be receiving individual messages.
These instructions reference Thunderbird (a program I am quite pleased
with by the way). MS Outlook and Outlook Express have similar features.
You may have to poke around the menu's a bit to find them.
