One might try boring a hole in threaded rod like Andy did, but then fasten the
cable in with a good grade of epoxy. We chemists tend to like molecules better
than set screws ;) The epoxy would be in shear, and that is usually the
strongest way to use glue. For best results, you would want to keep the hole
just large enough to pass the cable with a thin film of epoxy between. Up to a
point, the thinner a glue joint is, the stronger, usually. Might have to play
around a little to be sure of getting epoxy well down into the hole. Make sure
both parts are well degreased.
