Vibration of the scope is a bit different kettle of fish than the diameter
of the side bearings. Stiffness of the motions is more determined by the
angle of the bearing blocks as otherwise mentioned. Stiffness of the whole
scope is more how well the triangles of the various trusses are done. I saw
a scope once that had a nice stiffness in one direction and absolutely no
stiffness in the other direction. The guy that build it never realized his
problem other than it was a pain to use the scope that way. He stiffened
the scope n one direction and completely forgot to do so in the other
direction or that there also needs to be cross directional supprts to even
that. The rocker box also tends to suffer as it is generally built as a 3
sided box and thus has a flexible opening on one side.
