I have actually done sandblasting, on a 6" f/5 way back in 1971.   It took me two days of hand grinding to get rid of the central hole.   I do not recommend it.  Of course the sandblaster would not let me near the work area, and he was not accustomed to great precision...  I find that grinding mirror on top of a 3/4 diameter aluminum tool is pretty fast for removing glass and maintaining a reasonable approximation to a sphere.

As for making lightweight mirrors, my approach is well known to readers of the lost arc ives.
