Sure, if you have gross errors, it'll show them. 

I had a 22" f/4.5 that produced a poor image, both before and after refiguring (I didn't make it). The Ronchi star test BARELY showed any deviation from straight lines. 

I heard that the Ronchi star test works a little better if you have an f/10 mirror, but I haven't made any tests. 

I don't think you're missing anything.
