[ATM] OT how to cut threads

Hello 

Does any one know how to cut threads on a lathe?

I don't understand though, do you always have to change gears (I mean literally, like take one out and put another in) to cut different threads.  Because I kept the head stock at the same speed and then when I changed the lever on the left (being kind to turn the power off) the speed the head stock would run at compared to the carriage speed was always a constant.  

However I thought the guys on this list said that when I adjust that lever on the left it will change the carriage speed.

So I was hoping there is a way to make the carriage go a different rate without changing the gears (taking ones out and putting ones in) like just moving a lever.  But does anyone know?
Also I'll use the lathe to make an eyepiece latter on.
