Hey Nick,
  I'd be glad to help test your software if you get some going. 
Traditionally, ATM software is free to the community and not too many
of us like to register to use it.  You could ask the user to register
if they want to recieve updates and bug fixes but leave the option for
the person to refuse to register and still be able to get and use the
software.  Of course, if you came out with a program that commercial
opticians started to use, I would require them to actually pay for it. 
But I think you've got a long road ahead of you before you would get to
that point.
