Fresh coatings from Clausing come with a cardboard
disc backing a layer of cotton, all taped to the edge
of the disc. That seems pretty effective. :)
I'm thinking that a lined plywood disc could be used
to protect the face without contact, and still be
relatively lightweight for shipping. You need
something that won't deform under g-loading (the UPS
drop kick test). But the disc/mirror needs to
transfer its weight off to whatever the rest of your
packing material is...
