Yes, the source light needs to look stellar otherwise the test can't be run
properly.  That you are near is a minor problem in that when you focus, you
will have some spherical aberration - The original Foucault test was
actually a series of tests for eliptical mirrors, gradually going towards a
very long baseline between the focal points with the final test being a
qualitiative test against a very distant object, preferably a star.
You have to get your spherical aberration down to a survivable amount in
order to do the test right which is why you go so far away for the imitation
star.
