[ATM] Scoring and breaking 3/4" plate glass
Greetings All,
Just wanted to share a method I found to score and break 3/4" thick plate glass.
While my first cut failed, I finally stumbled onto something that worked. But
first, here's some pictures showing the resulting pieces laid out to resemble
the starting piece: (BTW, its easy to see the first cut that failed :)

Here's the method that I found to work the best:
#1 Lay the glass down on something soft, in my case the grass in the side yard
of the shop.
#2 Using a straight edge and a cheap red glass cutter, score your cut line. I
didn't use any lube or mineral spirits, just scored the glass after wiping the
dirt off. A few of the cuts were scored more than once, which is a 'no-no' but
didn't seem to make a difference.
#3 Flip the piece of glass over so the score line is facing down.
#4 Using a hammer and a 3" chisel, starting at the center of the cut, align the
chisel with the score mark. Tap the chisel with the hammer to get a fracture to
start between the back of the glass and the score mark. 'Chase' the fracture
towards both ends of the cut.
That's it, in my case the two piece just fell apart. To be honest, I'm still
fairly amazed how easy this turned out to be! :)
