[ATM] Fiberglass mounts?

Hi its my first time posting to this list so first of all thanks so much
for making such a active and friendly community. Now to the question I
am rebuilding my 8" dob into a split ring scope and I was thinking of
using foam core with a fiberglass shell for the rings and cages while
the main base would be out of heavier material and will contain other
equipment so that it would be stable. The advantages I see here are that
its an incrediable lightweight and strong structure. The problem is I
haven't ever really worked with fiberglass before, so im not to sure
about the disadvantages/praticality of the idea (i am familiar with the
fumes, mess, and other health factors). My main concern here is how
precisely can one build something with this method? In particular can
the thickness of the fiberglass be well determined, how much so? Also
has anyone ever tried this before or worked with fiberglass before and
is willing to lend a few tips/hints. Once again Thanks for the great
