To be honest, I don't know.  Several people have tried modeling broad 
supports in Plop, but the modeling has been more of "stiff" supports 
than "compliant" ones.  I don't know how to model compliant supports 
that are spread across and area using Plop.

Anecdotal evidence would seem to indicate that RTV pads work, but I do 
not have the tools to model them well enough to understand the physics 
of it all and whether they would be more tollerant of placement errors. 

It would seem that they might be more tolerant, but I have no proof of 
the fact.
