Yes there are safer alternatives to lead.  Lead just happened to be my
choice for this particular application due to its density and the fact I
needed a 5 pound weight that was smaller than anything else could achieve.
I used one 13" scope that used glass marbles as a counterweight.  I also
have used BB's in one rendition of the 10" scope that needed some
counterbalancing.  I hope to rebuild the 10" so that no counterbalancing is
required unless I mount my camera on it.  My 16.5" already achieves this
goal and only requires a small counterweight, about 8 oz., when I mount my
camera.  Proper stiction will eliminate most counterbalancing requirements.
I'll leave this topic alone now. I think I have said enough.
