For smaller/thinner weights, you can cast the lead in a catfood can,then
drill through (slow speed, lots of lubricant) and hammer a t-nut into
one end.

If you are a bit shy of melting and pouring lead, then try bb's and some
epoxy or polyester resin.  Wrap the threaded rod with a few layers of
paper, run a nut onto each end, and set them right into the ends as you
build up the bb/epoxy fill.  There are all kinds of possibilities for
containers with this method........your favorite beer or soft drink can,
cat and dog food cans (ALPO would be appropriate <G>), fruit and
vegetable cans (lacquer the label), snuff containers, your used caviar
tins..............!!!
