Re: [ATM] Balance, Danyo-san!
Hi Mark,
After filling the Coke can with melted lead and letting it cool in a bucket
of water, I put it in the drill press and drilled a hole through it
lengthwise. I had to drill halfway through from one end then turn it over
and drill from the opposite end to finish it. This hole was the same
diameter as the allthread excluding the threads. I then screwed the
allthread rod into this hole. It cut its own threads as it went. It took a
couple of tries to get all the way through. I then ran the tap through it
to clean up the threads. I then drilled a hole into it from the side and put
a thumbscrew into this hole to act as a locking device. It works.
When I rebuild this scope, I will balance it better on the altitude
bearings. Then the counterweight will only have to weigh a few ounces.
Whatever the weight difference is between the lightest eyepiece and the
digital camera, which is the heaviest thing I will mount on the focuser.
Clear skies, Jerry
