Hi Mark, I cast my threads into my lead weights.
Make the mould (damp sand, wood, bent tin) carbonize the required thread 
heavily in a candle flame, stick in the sand making sure there is 
carbonised thread everywhere the molten lead is going to go, pour, cool, 
wash and unscrew the thread.
Never had a failure doing this but I always use a coarse thread not a fine one
