Re: [ATM] Balance, Danyo-san!

Hi Matt,
On my 10" I have a lead counterbalance just in front of the altitude
bearings. Mine is a standard (?) Dob design. This counterbalance can be
adjusted up and down a shaft (the shaft is 1/4" by 20 all thread) simply by
spinning the weight clockwise or counterclockwise. The weight is threaded
and moves up and down the shaft at a touch and can be locked in place. I
can go from my lightest eyepiece to my digital camera and rebalance the
scope in seconds. Incidentally, the weight is a coke can filled with lead.
It weighs 5 pounds and mostly compensates for a design flaw that placed the
altitude bearings to close to the focuser. This will be corrected in a
future design and the weight will be reduced accordingly. However I like
being able to balance the scope without taking my eye from the eyepiece.
Clear skies, Jerry
