[ATM] Testing for Smoothness?

Hi All,

How might an inexperienced mirror maker test for smoothness?
Under a knife edge test, all looks great.  I have Suiter's book too.  Is 
there a preferred way to test when a reference is not available?  
Perhaps less testing and just getting them coated is in order?  They 
look very good under a Foucault test, but since it is a hobby, I have 
lots of time and learning to test is half the fun.  Would you say that 
if you cannot see any roughness in the Foucault test, then spherical 
aberration is most likely the primary flaw?  8", f/6.3.
