FW: [ATM] Optimal beginners mirror making project

Do a 4" f7 or so, then a 12"

You'll get thru 2 mirrors in that sequence faster than attempting the 12"
first. Learning and correcting mistakes goes much faster on the smaller
mirror, then the 12" will go much faster since you'll really know what you
are doing.

Then use the 4" as a finder for your 12".

Plate glass or pyrex won't matter much for your learning.
I'd go full thickness on the 12" to eliminate the complications of a thin
mirror.

You are also advised to have the mechanics done before you start figuring
(the final shape adjustment) your mirror, so you can star test it.

Subject: [ATM] Optimal beginners mirror making project

Anyway now that this project is going well, I'm starting to plan the
next one which will include making my own mirror. The question is :
What is the optimal size, focal length, material (ie pyrex or plate) etc
for a first mirror project? As I already have an 8" I would prefer
bigger, but it must have a very high chance of success. If I understand
properly, the smaller the size the easier. Would a 12", F5, plate glass
be too ambitious for a beginners project?
