Linear bearings are pretty good for this..these have a recirculating
tube of balls and move in a direction parallel to the shaft. Some have
an open gap and can be adjusted for zero clearance..I've built cassegrain
secondary focusing rams that used these bearings. The shafts have to be
ground, hardened, and polished.
