I have to agree with you on the horseshoe mount. I've built one for a scope
that I still haven't finished the mirror for and it fits into a nice small
area as the pole folds to the horseshoe RA section (a pair of bolts holds it
in place) and the pole bearing just comes out of it's support with no
problems. The tube's DEC bearings are easily clamped to the horseshoe
quickly and the whole thing goes together quickly. Don't forget to make
sure that the tripod foot (you do want to support the base with only 3
points!) at the polar axis has enough adjustment to be able to adjust for
differing ground problems.
