It's probably the fear of making a large flat that keeps people from making
one.  Look through the literature and you will find that there's a lot of
comments on the difficulty of making flats.  In truth, they are more
difficult to make than a curve but that's just because the curve has to be
only one rather than somewhere near the desired value.
