I am currently working on the same project and so far so good.  :)

How about using a diamond saw. I used to do lapidary and that blade would cut 
glass like butter,  then grind off excess on a steel plate with course grit?

Try eBay for cheaper diamond impregnated round steel blades.

Question though,  wouldn't you want to grind off the back first then make the 
mirror?
I would think less chance of distoying the figure. Just a thought.
