Look at what the lip is doing and you will probably be able to do the
function (always look at the function!) without adding more weight than
necessary. You can make a 1.5" wide bearing surface by taking the sideboard
and applying a thin cresent of 1/2" plywood on each side. You don't need to
go all the way to the bottom as the purpose of the extra width are merely to
provide the bearing surface and not for any support beneath. To remove more
weight, you may even want to taper the edge of the plywood a bit.
