The process of CeO/pitch isn't a crunching one that the grinding grits do
but rather a multiprocess one that carves the glass pretty much in a shaving
action. There are those who also report chemical action but I'm not too
sure about that one as there's a fair number of chemicals that do the
polishing action. Even finer grits than the 5-12 micron grit that we tend
to stop at still don't actually get a true polished surface but rather a
much finer ground surface. The finer the grind tho, the faster the surface
does get polished when you actually do the polishing.
If you're grinding by hand, going below about 5 micron is just going to
cause problems with sleeks and sticking but power grinding with continously
fed grit onto the surface does allow for finer grinding. There are charts
that will give the grit size for the different standards of measuring them
on the web.
And yes, welding is kind of permanent!
