Hi Bill

I had a similar problem.
my solution was as you suggest and I sanded the barrel with 600 grit wet
and
dry ( all that I had available) and I also gave the star diagonal a sand
too.
I haven't noticed any problems. just make sure you clean the dust away
properly.
