        Just heat, either to simmer, or a soft boil, depending on your
taste(boiliing pitch is kind of scary). About every 15 minutes, take a
little glob of pitch and drop it into a glass of water at room temperature.
Test the pitch using your favorite method. I like the thumbnail test
myself. As the pitch gets nearer to the desired hardness, test more often.

        Your results may vary, but I would say you are looking at around an
hour of simmering after the pitch is completely melted. But don't just
simmer it for that long and use it, cuz' you need to test.
