Announce: ASTROCON99 and ATM'ing
Hi,
The Spokane Astronomical Society would like to invite you to attend
ASTROCON99, the annual convention of the Astronomical League. This years
convention will feature (for the first time we believe) events specifically
for children. One of these events is Telescope Building. We will buy twenty
4.25" StarGazer Steve telescope kits and in two, 4 hour sessions, members of
the SAS ATM group will assist interested children in building these scopes.
We hope to teach them not only *how* to build a telescope but how a
telescope works. Once the scopes are finished we will take the children out
under the star filled sky and teach them how to collimate and use the
telescopes.
Each child who participates in building the scopes will be given a door
prize ticket. At the end of the convention a drawing will be held and all
twenty scopes will be given away among those who participate. There will be
no fee to participate in this event other than the convention registration
itself. The telescope kits are being paid for by donations from individuals
and businesses.
Please visit our web site at: http://www.spokaneastronomical.org/astrocon99/
to register or to find out more. One interesting thing is that Story
Musgrave will be staying in the on campus dorm (his idea) for the duration
of the convention and you can too.
If you cannot attend the convention, perhaps you might consider making a
donation to help buy the scope kits? Email me if you are interested.
We look forward to seeing you at the last AL convention of century.
