Recently I posted my thoughts on figuring.
An astute reader responded to my posting with the following message:

I have to take issue with this gentleman. Witness this piece of expert
advice I found in "Amateur Telescope Making" (fourth edition, page 80).

"The polishing room should never be swept, and no feminine hand should
ever be allowed, on any pretext whatever, to "tidy" it. Total
destruction of a polished surface may be the result of neglect of this
rule... A lock on the door and the key in his pocket is the best
safeguard."
