I think not -- the glazing is useful; when it has disappeared, you know
the tiles are "bedded in" to the mirror.

I don't know if it's ideal, but I have a spacing of around 0.25" (6mm)

(Not answering, since I've never done it - I hog out with a cast iron
dumbell weight and cast the plaster to the rough-ground mirror.)
