Re: [ATM] soldering aluminum

Soldering is low temperature (<800 F) where the joined metals do not melt.
Generally the joining metal/alloy (solder) is soft and the joint is
non-structural. Some joined metals can be different types and in some cases
there can be a very thin layer of alloying between the joined metal with the
solder at the surface of the joined metal.

Brazing is mid temperature (>800 F) where the joined metals do not melt.
Generally the joining metal/alloy (braze) is hard and the joint is
structural. The braze can fill small gaps and can be used in fillets. Some
joined metals can be different types and in most cases there is a thicker
layer of alloying between the joined metal with the braze at the surface of
the joined metal. The joint can be machined.

Welding is high temperature where the joined metals melt and alloy with each
other and the joining metal/alloy. The joined metals and the weld
metal/alloy must be of similar type and characteristics and the joint is
structural and can be machined. Due to the depth of the melt zone, this is
the strongest joint.

For DuraFix, the temperature is just under 800 F, but the joining
metal/alloy is hard and strong and shares all other characteristics of
brazing. I have seen it demonstrated on aluminum in person and I could not
break the patch (as in the aluminum can demo in the video). Those videos
are no trick. I was convinced and had the opportunity to use it. It works
as advertized. I recommend the higher temperature of the MAPP gas torch
rather than propane.

I've seem this on TV a couple of times. Always wondered how well it
works. There's a video showing different aluminum repairs etc.
