I do not dispute that silvering can be done inexpensively. The
arguments against reside in having to frequently resurface
the mirror and lack of affordable protective overcoats. Does
the method you are using solve either of these?
That being said, I have one aluminizing mirror in which I
suspect there was some degradation of image quality (blurriness)
with the protective coating. I have considered doing what
some of the pros do, which is to just skip this coating.
If the aluminum does not last without the coating, silvering
might look attractive. I suspect in the end, I will regard
myself as just having been unlucky with that one mirror,
and all is well with aluminizing. More to the point really,
I just wanted to peer at the skies with an unprotected mirror,
and in some cases, even before it is aluminized.
