Don't worry too much about the back of the tool.  The important
thing here is that it doesn't rock too much while grinding.
If you want to have some fun, take a belt sander to the backside
with some real rocks on the paper and grind it flatter.
When I make a tool from dental stone, I pull the dam off of the
tool/mirror and level out the backside.  The stuff is quite soft
at this point as the hydration isn't done and you can easily run
a straightedge across the backside and get it level.  Sanding on
a piece of concrete driveway also works well although there is
the teltale line of "chalk" on the driveway afterwords.  Then I
remove the tool from the glass and finish the frontside.
Maybe Tom Moulton should come to RTMC and have a session of
making a tool out there on the field, especially with a video
camera to record the whole mess.
