Re: [ATM] Walnut particles.
Hi,
On my 8 inch DOB I tried using ground walnut shells sold in bags from a pet
store. They are used for caged birds.
I brushed carpenter's glue inside my tube and sprinkled and rolled the
shells however it was not that easy. It tended to clump especially if the
glue was thicker in some areas.
After this I brushed flat black paint over the entire mixture. This helped
it stick better also. The final step was spraying Krylon flat black
spray-paint since it seemed darker then the brushed paint.
It worked fairly well, however at first I had problems with loose particles
that fell on to my mirror. They could be blown off easily.
For the amount of work involved, I wonder if the flocking paper idea would
work better. I discovered that the most critical part of blocking stray
light is on the top end. Baffling your focuser, and making sure you have
enough tube above your secondary mirror. That extra few inches protects
from streetlights, and neighbors super spotlights etc.
You don't want any light to enter your focuser tube from the top -- only
light from your secondary.
Mike.
