[ATM] Curious

Hi All

I've been lurking here for about two and a half years which has been great.
Thanks for all of the good info, great links and pics of fantastic scopes. I
was intending to continue to lurk until I'd finished my latest disasterpiece
(sadly I don't mean masterpiece) but I saw something yesterday that I have
to ask about so here I am.

A short while ago someone posted links to their Youtube ATM videos, good and
informative and yes, cats are a pain aren't they! After viewing them I
started looking at others and one caught my eye. It was a (I guess) six inch
mirror on a tool. The person pushed it back and forth, one or two thirds
COC, before turning the tool one way, to simulate 'walking round the
barrel', and the mirror the other way before pushing and pulling the mirror
again. But they pushed and pulled it back and forth four or five times
between each turn of the tool / step round the barrel. From what I've
gathered from books, internet and this group, I'd assumed you did it once,
i.e. starting centre of mirror over centre of tool pull it towards you, push
it back over/passed the centre of the tool and then pull it back to the
start before taking the next step / turn of the tool.

As I've only done two mirrors so far I cant comment but my questions are:-
1/ Have I been doing it wrong? Or is it 'six of one, a half dozen of the
rest'? Or do you do one in one situation and the other in another?
2/ Is this how you do the W stroke? I've never managed to get the hang of
that one. I mean do start with small back and forth strokes one side of the
centre, increasing to larger strokes over the centre and then reducing to
smaller strokes the other side of the centre THEN take a step round INSTEAD
of taking a step between each single push and pull?

Yours wishing to learn more Neil
