Sorry, but I'm not a good chemist at all.
That sounds to me like it would be wise when heating pitch for
pouring on a mlap to first heat it under water and get the water
boiling and then pour off the water and reheat the pitch and do
the lap.
To me, whatever it is is something that occasionally happens and
then stops.
I consider acetone and MEK to be the "hot" gunk removers and
paint thinner, turpentine to be much more mild ones. I guess
that is the layman's terms for how active they are.
